Canon EOS 7D Mark II

The long-awaited EOS 7D Mark II takes the strengths of its predecessor – highly capable autofocus and video – and builds on every aspect of them. The camera is now comprised of advanced sensors and processors to provide high image quality than the EOS 7D.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Specifications

Body Design

The 7D Mark II’s body is very similar to the 7D, providing similar levels of (generally-good) grip and ergonomics. We were told by Canon that the 7D Mark II is ‘four-times more weather-sealed’ than the original 7D. The button layout and controls are almost changed as a result it provides comfortable handling.

Optics and Focus

The camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF function provides smooth and accurate focusing when shooting videos so that subjects will remain in focus even in the most dynamic scenes. This enables high-speed phase-difference detection AF on the CMOS sensor plane, allowing for extremely fast AF and smooth subject tracking. The AF speed can also be adjusted to suit more sophisticated shots, such as slower focus shifts to suit softer moments. One of the highlights of the EOS 7D Mark II is undoubtedly the 65-point, all cross-type autofocus system. Let’s just stipulate up front that this focusing system is very fast. It’s easy to see in One-Shot focus mode when the AF points light up almost instantly upon pressing the shutter button.

  • Lens mount – Canon EF
  • Focal length multiplier – 1.6x

Auto Focus

  • AI Servo AF characteristics – Tracking sensitivity, Acceleration/deceleration tracking, AF point auto switching
  • Focusing Range – -3 to 18 EV

Screen and Viewfinder

The size of the viewfinder is a key factor in usability – the bigger it is, the easier it is to frame and focus your shots, and the more enjoyable and involving process it is. The EOS 7D Mark II viewfinder boasts 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification in APS-C terms (0.63x magnification in full-frame terms) which puts it squarely with its predecessor. The EOS 7D Mark II uses 1.04 million dots 3.0″ LCD featuring the latest gapless technology that reduces internal reflections to improve contrast.

With a fast burst rate, users will be able to capture sporting events, wildlife, or active children with precision and sharpness. To cater to the needs of users who prefer low-shooting speeds and capturing slower moving subjects, the EOS 7D Mark II comes equipped with manually adjustable speeds – a feature previously only available in the top range EOS 1D series. With a new mirror bounce reduction mechanism, users may opt for Silent Mode while shooting under 5 fps.

Video or Movie Features

The EOS 7D Mark II features enhanced video capabilities with the addition of the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF function. Mark II’s ability to track faces or other subjects is stellar, even if the subject briefly leaves the frame entirely, the camera will usually reacquire it should it re-enter the frame within a second or two. In Live View and movie recording mode with the new system, the subjects will be constantly kept in focus even with erratic changes in their distance from the camera, the 7D II appears to perform just as well in real-world use.
